When it comes to fall color, the Rockies show off the world’s biggest organisms: aspen trees! These delicate, silver-barked trees are connected by their roots, so the enormous groves you’ll see stretching across entire hillsides are one gigantic living plant. And autumn is when they really let their light shine as their distinctively shaped leaves twinkle with pure gold. It’s not just one shade of yellow— from bright, sunshiny yellows to deep oranges and golds, these trees run the gamut. See this dazzling display of colors on our fall foliage tour of the Rockies. We’ll see it by road…and rail, as we embark on two scenic trains, and rides on this fall foliage adventure. The first is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, also a National Historic Landmark.

At 64 miles in length, it is the longest, highest, and most authentic steam railroad in North America, traveling through the most spectacular scenery in the Rocky Mountain West. The train crosses state borders 11 times, zigzagging along canyon walls, burrowing through two tunnels, and steaming over 137-foot Cascade Trestle. Steam along through deep forests of aspens and evergreens, across high plains filled with wildflowers, and through a rocky gorge of remarkable geologic formations. Deer, antelope, elk, fox, eagles, and even bears are frequently spotted on this off-the-grid adventure. Afterward, you know why readers of USA Today called it the best and most scenic train ride in America (2016, 2019, 2020). But that’s not all; enjoy a second famous train ride: the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad! This historic train has been in continuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882, offering a view of Colorado’s mountain splendor inaccessible by highway. Departing from the Durango Depot, our unforgettable trip takes you up into the Rocky Mountains with fall foliage views of the San Juan National Forest as you travel alongside the beautiful Animas River to the historic mining town of Silverton. Our autumn journey through the Rockies includes a stop famous for foliage: Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Located near the town of Montrose in western Colorado, you’ll visit the park, this stunning 48-mile gorge of the Gunnison River. The gorge is over 2000 feet deep and so narrow that sunlight only reaches certain lower portions for a half-hour each day. Early fall is a great time for a visit to Black Canyon, as colors in the area tend to peak around late September, and temperatures often stay in the 70s. It's also when Aspens and oak trees come alive in a colorful display of oranges, yellows, and reds. A second national park we’ll see is the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Sink into the highest mountains of sand in North America, where the Sangre de Cristo Mountains buckle inward. The dunes within the borders of Great Sand Dunes National Park have been building and sifting for eons — the result of the San Luis Valley's unique wind patterns. There are numerous other inclusions and stops along the way. Price includes all motorcoach transportation, 8 days/7 nights (2 nights in Amarillo en route, 3 nights in Durango, Colorado, and 2 nights in the San Luis Valley of Colorado; 10 meals (6 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 2 dinners) Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, numerous surprise stops along the way, a Little Rock Tours guide, and all your taxes!
