Our time in Washington State also includes taking in spectacular Mount Rainer National Park, rising 14,410 feet toward the often-cloudy Pacific Northwest sky; this mountain dominates the landscape in central Washington State. Our time in the Pacific Northwest also takes us to Mount St Helens Visitors Center-- created after the massive 1980 eruption of the volcano, the most devastating volcanic event in U.S. historyin terms of both numbers of deaths and economic destruction. Then were off to the Johnston Ridge Observatory to hear the story of Mount St. Helens and its eruption and learn more about the areas unique geology and history. While were there, well see the spectacular view of the blown-away crater and the wildflowers that cover the fertile valleys, slopes, and ridges.
Our time in the area also includes a visit to the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Carved through the Cascade Mountains by the mighty Columbia River, the Gorge is home to lush forests and gorgeous waterfalls, including the famous Multnomah Falls, another stop along our journey through the Pacific Northwest. After our time in Washington State, we will drive further south into beautiful Oregon, enjoying spectacular scenery along the Oregon coastincluding time to stop at the most famous lighthouses and towering monuments to Oregons maritime heritage. After several scenic coastal stops along the way, we will eventually make our way to Oregons only national park, Crater Lake National Park. An awe-inspiring, glorious park centered on eponymous Crater Lake. This water-filled caldera was created after the massive eruption and collapse of Mount Mazama, once a mighty volcano in the Pacific Northwest, about 7,700 years ago. Although its origins are undeniably violent, Crater Lake is now a prime example of peace and tranquility.
Our tour will take us along the historic Rim Drivewhich includes 33 miles of lake views, panoramic vistas, forests, and meadows.
