Vermont's hills are alive with the sound of music at the iconic hotel owned and operated by the von Trapp Family. Join us on a spectacular springtime tour to New England for a stay at this 2,600-acre mountain resort in the European tradition owned and operated by the family from "The Sound of Music." The lodge offers Austrian decor, spectacular mountain views, European-style cuisine and nightly entertainment! Our stay at the Trapp Family Lodge is just one highlight of a springtime trek to New England, complete with a 3-night visit to Cape Cod, where we will go sailing, sand-dunning, and spend a day on the island of Nantucket! We also include two nights in the famed Shenandoah Valley, where youll be charmed by the valleys unique culture and beautiful scenery, including a visit to Shenandoah Valley National Parkboasting stunning views, waterfalls, and wildlife. We'll depart Little Rock for two nights in the Shenandoah Valley, overnighting along the way. Our two nights in the area includes a visit through the Shenandoah Valley National Park, and Virginia's Skyline Drive--a National Scenic Byway along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Drive is a worthy destination in its own right. A springtime visit offers the most colorful wildflowers along the drive, as well as blooming azaleas and mountain laurel. We also include a visit to Old Town Winchester --a vital marketplace for more than 250 years. Old Town Winchester is located within the heart of a 45-block National Register Historic District and features a quaint pedestrian walking mall bursting with outdoor cafes, specialty shops, historic attractions and activities throughout the year.
Next up is the agenda is the Trapp Family Lodge. We'll overnight along the way, stopping at Hershey's Chocolate factory, before making our way to Vermont. If you've seen the movie, you know the von Trapps were able to escape Austria and eventually years later settle in Stowe, Vermont, in 1942. The family house is nestled in the lush, rolling green mountains, reminiscent of the Austrian landscape they had left behind. By 1947, the von Trapps had renovated their house to become a lodge, which opened it's doors to visitors from around the world. Our time at the Trapp Family Lodge includes a guided tour of the property, and an included dinner at the on-site restaurant, where you'll experience an old-world ambiance and world-class dining. European-inspired dishes sourced locally, are paired with your favorite beverage. Accommodations at the Trapp Family Lodge present you with a crowning experience of the unique harmony that the spirit of Austria and Vermont create. Our time in Vermont also includes additional stops at Cold Cider Mill, Ben and Jerrys, Bulington's famous Church street, and some of the beautiful covered-bridges Vermont is famous for. After we leave Vermont, we'll travel to nearby Cape Cod for a three-night stay.
Experiences during out stay on the Cape include visiting the dunes with Arts Dune Tours out of Provincetown. Protected by the National Park Service, Arts Dune Tours is the only company to get a yearly permit to drive through the dunes. Imagine dunes stretching as far as you can see with wispy beach grass, dark green pine trees and deep red beach plums nestled in hollows which are brought together by a silhouette of blue sky. You will travel through the majestic dunes where your guide points out the "dune shacks" where famous artists and writers like Eugene O'Neill and Harry Kemp became inspired to create their art. It is such a beautiful tour! You will also pass the remains of the Peaked Hill Life Saving Station and learn how the brave "life savers" enacted their heroic efforts to save the lives of thousands from the doomed shipwrecks! But that's not all...while in Provincetown--the very tip of Cape Cod--we'll go sailing together on the Schooner Hindu . This ship is nearly a 100-year-old authentic wooden schooner, designed by legendary boat builder William Hand and built in 1925. She has been carrying tourists and locals alike through the enchanting waters of Provincetown since 1946! But our time in New England is not over yet. You'll also enjoy a ferry ride out to Nantucket Island to spend the day on this legendary New England destination. Once known as the whaling capital of the world in the 1800s, you'll will find gourmet restaurants, trendy boutiques, and pre-Civil War houses on cobblestone streets that are still shaded by century-old elms. After our time on the Cape, we'll make our way back home, with two more overnights as we travel back to Arkansas, and many included surprise stops along the way!
