Discover the extraordinary colors, shadows, and towering formations of Sedonas legendary Red Rock Country, where jaw-dropping scenery surrounds you at every turn! This unforgettable nine-day adventure takes us beyond the ordinary, combining breathtaking natural wonders, fascinating Native American history, scenic rail travel, and three wonderful nights at the Marriott Element Hotel in beautiful Sedona.
Our journey begins with two overnight stays along the way, as we venture off the beaten path through New Mexicos remarkable "Land of Fire and Ice." Located along the Continental Divide, this extraordinary landscape is home to ancient lava flows, rugged volcanic terrain, and a natural ice cave that seems almost impossible to find in the high desert.
Well explore the fascinating Ice Caves and Bandera Volcano, walking among twisted old-growth juniper, fir, and ponderosa pine trees before following ancient lava trails into a dormant volcanic landscape. Inside the perpetual ice cave, layers of ice shimmer with beautiful blue-green hues as sunlight filters into this remarkable natural wonder. Well also view Bandera Volcano, an impressive cinder cone that offers a fascinating glimpse into the powerful volcanic forces that shaped this region.
Then, its on to the spectacular beauty of Sedona, Arizona! Nestled within a geological wonderland, Sedona is surrounded by magnificent red sandstone formations that rise dramatically from the high desert floor. These multi-hued cliffs and towering pinnacles transform with the changing sunlight, creating a mesmerizing landscape that has captivated visitors for generations. With three nights to enjoy this enchanting destination, well have time to experience its scenery, history, shopping, and distinctive Southwest charm.
One of our most memorable adventures will take us aboard the historic Verde Canyon Railroad for a four-hour journey into Arizonas other "grand canyon." This scenic rail excursion follows a protected corridor alongside the Verde River, winding past towering red rock pinnacles, ancient Native American ruins, fortified bridges, and a remarkable 734-foot tunnel carved through solid rock more than a century ago. Keep your eyes open for wildlife and the lush desert vegetation that thrives along the river. With panoramic views in every direction, this is a rail adventure you wont soon forget!
Well also climb aboard an open-air trolley for a guided exploration of Sedonas celebrated landmarks. Along the way, well admire the striking Chapel of the Holy Cross, the distinctive formations of Thunder Mountain and Chimney Rock, and the towering red rock walls surrounding Boynton and Fay Canyons in the Coconino National Forest. With a knowledgeable guide to point out the highlights, well discover why Sedona is considered one of the Southwests most spectacular destinations.
Of course, no visit to Sedona would be complete without time to shop, stroll, and soak up the atmosphere at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village. Nestled beneath shady sycamore trees along beautiful Oak Creek, this distinctive village was designed in the style of a traditional Mexican community, complete with charming courtyards, art galleries, specialty shops, and inviting walkways. A Sedona landmark since the 1970s, Tlaquepaque offers a wonderful opportunity to discover Southwestern art, browse unique treasures, and enjoy the relaxed charm of this beloved shopping destination.
As we begin our journey home, well visit one of Americas most extraordinary natural treasures: the Grand Canyon! Well spend several hours along the magnificent South Rim, allowing time for lunch and spectacular views into this immense chasm carved by the Colorado River. Whether this is your first visit or a return to a place you already love, standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon is an experience that never loses its wonder.
After our visit, well settle in for the evening at the renowned Cameron Trading Post, just east of the Grand Canyon, where an included dinner and a comfortable nights rest await us.
Our return journey continues through the remarkable landscapes of Navajo Country, where well discover even more unexpected treasures. Well stop at the Navajo Moenave Dinosaur Tracks, where ancient footprints offer a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life; visit the historic Hubbell Trading Post, an enduring symbol of the trading traditions that connected Navajo communities with the outside world; and explore the National Navajo Museum to learn more about Navajo history, culture, art, and heritage. Well also visit the Sky City Cultural Center, adding another meaningful cultural experience to our Southwest adventure.
With one final overnight along the way, well make our way back to Little Rock carrying wonderful photographs, unforgettable scenery, and memories of a journey filled with natural wonders, rich history, and the extraordinary spirit of the American Southwest.
